“SAKURA internet Research Center, ” a laboratory within the digital infrastructure service provider SAKURA internet Inc. (Headquarters: Osaka City, Osaka; Founder, CEO, and President: Kunihiro Tanaka, hereafter “SAKURA internet”), built a cloud-based supercomputer system (hereafter “supercomputer”) called “SAKURAONE.” This supercomputer has ranked 49th worldwide in the “TOP500*1,” an international ranking of supercomputer processing performance.
As demand for generative AI and large language models (LLMs) capable of optimizing diverse tasks rapidly rises, high-performance supercomputers that serve as the infrastructure supporting these technological developments are growing in importance. Supercomputers are increasingly being utilized as essential infrastructure for accelerating research and development in the AI field across various industries, including manufacturing, medicine, and finance.
“SAKURAONE,” a cloud-based supercomputer ranked 49th globally, was jointly developed by the SAKURA internet Research Center and Prunus-Solutions Inc., a SAKURA internet Group company specializing in system integration in the area of hyper-performance computing (HPC).
The design and construction of “SAKURAONE,” a cloud-based supercomputer specialized in LLM learning, were achieved through an LLM development project led by a national research and development agency that determined the optimal system configuration for running LLMs.
This system utilizes “NVIDIA H100 SXM 80GB GPUs” and achieved 33.95 petaflops (PFLOPS)*2 on the LINPACK benchmark*3.
In 2019, our company’s cloud-based supercomputer ranked 54th worldwide in the same ranking. That cloud-based supercomputer has an actual measured performance of 3.71 PFLOPS, whereas “SAKURAONE” has realized over ten times that computing power.
Based on the principle of turning “‘what you want to do’ into ‘what you can do,’” SAKURA internet Research Center will continue its research and development endeavors to realize new and valuable internet infrastructures for society.
*1 “The TOP500” list was announced on June 10, 2025 (Japan time) at “ISC 2025,” an international conference and exhibition on HPC held in Hamburg, Germany. https://www.isc-hpc.com/
*2 This is the abbreviation for peta floating-point operations per second, a unit for measuring computer processing performance. A peta is equivalent to one quadrillion (1015) and indicates that one quadrillion floating-point operations can be performed per second.
*3 This is the standard benchmark used for the “TOP500” to evaluate system performance based on floating-point arithmetic.
